Dextran refers to a homopolysaccharide composed of glucose as the monosaccharide, with glucose units connected by glycosidic bonds. Based on the type of glycosidic bond, it can be further divided into α-dextran and β-dextran. The hydroxyl groups on its side chains are highly reactive and can be chemically modified to produce multifunctional active dextran derivatives. Compared with other polysaccharides, dextran can be slowly degraded by enzymes in the human body, and it can also be broken down through cleavage by enzymes from microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract.
