Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) is a chitosan derivative obtained by carboxymethylation of chitosan. Depending on the position of the carboxymethyl substitution, it can be classified into O-carboxymethyl, N-carboxymethyl, and O,N-carboxymethyl chitosan. While retaining the excellent properties of chitosan itself, CMCS significantly improves the water solubility as well as the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of chitosan under neutral and alkaline conditions.CMCS molecular chains contain abundant -OH, -COOH, and -NH2 groups, and more active groups can be introduced through chemical modification. It has wide applications in promoting wound healing, preventing postoperative adhesions, drug delivery, targeted therapy, gene therapy, and biosensors.
