Hydrogels are natural or synthetic polymer networks that swell in water and are mechanically, chemically and electrically compatible with biological tissues. Since the invention of hydrogel contact lenses in 1960, people have been conducting in-depth research and development of medical hydrogels. Recently, functional hydrogel coatings with controlled thickness and toughness have been successfully achieved on various substrates. Hydrogel-coated substrates strongly combine the advantages of hydrogels (such as lubricity, biocompatibility, and anti-biofouling properties) with the advantages of substrates (such as stiffness, toughness, and strength).

In view of this, Academician Yang Wei of Zhejiang University reviewed the research progress of emerging functional hydrogel coatings.

Article points
1) The author summarized the applications and functions of hydrogel coatings, including: drug delivery, lubricity, anti-biofouling, neural electrode conductive coatings, sensing, stimulus response, resistance to marine biological pollution and oil and water Separation and so on.

2) The author summarized the methods of coating various substrates with strong hydrogels with different functionalities, including: surface bridging, surface initiation, hydrogel coating method and purification of hydrogel coatings.

3) The author summarized the tests used to evaluate the adhesion between the functional hydrogel coating and the substrate. Including: thickness dependent adhesion test, peel test, simple tensile test, scratch test, probe tensile test and double cantilever beam (DCB) test, etc.

4) The author finally looked forward to the research and challenges faced by functional hydrogel coatings.
