In this review, shi Jianlin and Zhu Yufang of Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) reviewed the progress of research on cancer treatment by nanoplate-based cascade engineering.

Main points of this article:

(1) In order to accurately and effectively treat cancer, many therapeutic technologies have been developed, such as targeted drug delivery, optical therapy, tumor-specific catalytic therapy and collaborative therapy, etc. However, due to the inherent limitations and complex biological environment of these treatment methods, the effects of these treatment methods are not satisfactory. With the rapid development of nanotechnology, nanoplate-based cascade engineering is proving to be an effective strategy for optimizing the defense of these cancer treatments. Such nanoplatforms can trigger preset cascade processes under certain conditions, producing or delivering more therapeutic species or producing stronger anti-tumor effects within the tumor, thus improving anti-tumor efficacy and reducing side effects.

(2) In this paper, the author reviews the latest advances in the application of nanorodacter-based cascade engineering in cancer treatment, focusing on the unique structure, composition and properties of such intelligent nanorodacterods, as well as the research of cascade engineering using endogenous tumor microenvironment or external energy. Compared with a single component or function, this cascade engineering strategy has a very good performance in enhancing cancer treatment, as well as better controllability, specificity, and therapeutic effectiveness. Finally, the challenges and prospects of this emerging strategy in the field of cancer therapy are discussed in order to promote the further development of this strategy to meet the needs of personalized treatment.
