Adv. Mater: Blood-derived biomaterials for catheter-guided arterial embolization

source:beike new material Views:4354time:2020-11-23 QQ Academic Group: 1092348845

Vascular embolization is a catheter-based, minimally invasive method for the treatment of bleeding blood vessels. It allows these catheters to push a large number of metal coils into the bleeding artery to stop blood flow. However, this type of spiral embolism also has many shortcomings and limits their further development. Mayo Medical Center Rahmi Oklu designed a new type of blood-derived embolic material (BEM) with regenerative properties that can achieve immediate and long-lasting intra-arterial hemostasis.

Key points of this article:

(1) The experimental results show that in the vascular embolization model of large animals, BEM can be prepared with fresh blood within 26 minutes, and can be easily delivered to the embolized kidney and iliac arteries by clinical catheters. To achieve rapid hemostasis in the blood vessels.

(2) In porcine arteries, BEM can increase cell proliferation, angiogenesis and connective tissue deposition, indicating that it can promote vascular healing and achieve long-lasting vascular occlusion. In summary, compared with the embolization materials currently used, BEM has significant advantages and is expected to develop into a new and efficient embolization tool.
