Chen Tianfeng ACS Nano from Jinan University: New black phosphorous nano system realizes tumor radiosensitization

Coordination-driven surface modification is an effective strategy to realize the functionalization of nanosystems and improve physical and chemical properties. Black phosphorus nanomaterials have great application potential in tumor treatment, but their poor stability, low X-ray mass attenuation coefficient, and non-selectivity limit their application in radiotherapy. Here, Chen Tianfeng and others from Jinan University used unsaturated iridium complexes and BP nanosheets to synthesize a two-dimensional layered nanosystem (RGD-Ir@BP) with higher biological stability for tumor radiotherapy .

Key points of this article:

1) Ir complexes improve the photoelectric properties and photocarrier dynamics of BP, so Ir@BP produces more singlet oxygen after x-ray irradiation.

2) In vivo experiments show that through X-ray irradiation, RGD-Ir@BP can effectively inhibit the growth of nasopharyngeal carcinoma tumors with less side effects. In addition, based on non-targeted metabolomics analysis, combination therapy can specifically down-regulate the prostaglandin E2 tumor proliferation marker in cancer cells.

In summary, this study provides a high-performance synergy-driven design strategy for BP-based tumor radiotherapy nanosensitizers.
