Gel electrolytes are a type of semi-solid electrochemical material that combine high ionic conductivity with mechanical stability. Their core characteristic is the uniform dispersion and immobilization of liquid electrolytes (such as lithium salts, sodium salts, etc., dissolved in organic or aqueous solvent systems) within a three-dimensional polymer network structure (such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyethylene oxide (PEO), gelatin, sodium alginate, or natural/synthetic polymer matrices like modified cellulose), forming a composite system that combines the high ion transport efficiency of liquid electrolytes with the structural stability of solid electrolytes.
This material demonstrates outstanding electrochemical performance: its ionic conductivity at room temperature is ≥3.13×10⁻⁴ S/cm (i.e., ≥0.313 mS/cm), meeting or exceeding the basic requirements for ion transport efficiency in most applications (close to the lower range of conventional liquid electrolytes), and can effectively support rapid charge migration. At the same time, through physical/chemical cross-linking of the polymer network, it suppresses issues such as leakage, volatilization, and interfacial instability of liquid electrolytes, significantly enhancing the safety and cycle life of battery systems.
